OLATHE, Kan. (KCTV) - Two months ago, Matthew Jacobo pleaded guilty to second-degree reckless murder leaving the scene of a fatal crash that left a 9-year-old boy dead. He has been sentenced to more than 11 years in prison for his crimes.

Jacobo appeared in Johnson County District Court for a sentencing hearing on Thursday afternoon.

On Dec. 1, 2023, tragically died from his injuries in the crash on Dec. 7.

He pleaded guilty to the first two crimes on Nov. 15, 2024.

The child’s parents were not present at the sentencing hearing, but friends and family gave statements on how much Nolan was missed every day.

“One night, bad decisions changed the course of his life and so many other lives and Nolan from us forever so nothing he has to say is going to make that better. I guess we got to know he is sorry and feels remorse for what he did but that doesn’t change what happened,” said family friend Lyndsay Farnsworth-Dick.

The prosecutor called it the most tragic case he had ever prosecuted, and Jacobo apologized to Nolan’s loved ones.

Jacobo said he accepted the consequences of his actions and that he has attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings since the crash.

“I know I’m a little bit cold or jaded to it, you know I guess I appreciate what he said but no matter what, he said, or what happened, it wasn’t gonna bring Nolan back and it’s hard to feel bad for him because unfortunately we miss Nolan,” said Nolan’s soccer coach Mo Lorridon.

He was sentenced on Thursday to a total of 136 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections.
