Woman charged with child abduction after 5-year-old taken from daycare
LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. (KCTV) - A Lee’s Summit woman has been charged with child abduction after a 5-year-old child was not properly checked out of her daycare.
Jackson County, Missouri, Circuit Court records filed on Tuesday, Feb. 18, have revealed that Sarah A. Williams, 42, of Lee’s Summit, has been charged with child abduction in connection to an alleged kidnapping.
A probable cause statement filed by the Lee’s Summit Police Department indicated that just before 5:20 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18, they were called to an area daycare where they learned Williams had taken a 5-year-old child from the facility.
The victim’s father reported he had arrived to pick up his daughter when he learned the child’s mother, who is not to have with her, had taken her an hour earlier.
Investigators said they learned daycare staff did not follow the proper checkout procedure during the incident but were able to confirm Williams was the suspect.
Law enforcement officials indicated that Williams and the child were found at her home where she was taken into custody. During an interview, Williams claimed to not be aware of the order that barred her from with the child. She claimed the child was not safe and she would not stop until she was.
As a result, Williams has been charged with child abduction. If convicted, she could face up to 4 years behind bars with a $10,000 fine. As of Thursday, Feb. 20, she remains behind bars on a $10,000 bond. A hearing has not yet been scheduled in the case.
