STEM career event in KC introduces female students to engineer, science professions
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Young girls had the chance to explore STEM careers on Feb. 12 for Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (IGED) at the Kansas City Convention Center.
Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) are male-dominated fields and women make up less than 30% of the STEM workforce.
Organizers hope the event gets more girls interested in these fields by surrounding them with women who are in STEM fields.
“They get to see all the women around them as mentors,” Sydney Easler, Kansas City National Security Campus Mechanical Engineer, said. “All these women are engineers today, so it really helps show them they can do this as a career. As a student, I was able to talk with all these mentors and hear from their experiences and that kind of helped shape my experience moving forward. So coming back as an engineer, it’s my goal to help have that same impact on these students.”
This is the 15th year for IGED. More information and ways to get involved in the future can be found here.
