OLATHE, Kan. (KCTV) - Hundreds of people showed out at Lake Olathe for the annual Polar Plunge benefitting Special Olympics Kansas on Saturday.

This year, individuals, teams and businesses raised over $70,000 compared to last year’s Polar Plunge that raised $45,000. Chris Burt, CEO of Special Olympics Kansas, said this makes it the largest fundraising year since 2012.

“It’s a fundraiser, but it’s also awareness for the programming that special Olympics Kansas provides,” said Burt. “It kicks off the year for us, so a good polar plunge sets us up for a good year, and this year’s gonna be a great one.”

Burt also gave advice to those who may be on the fence about plunging into frigid water.

“You can do it,” said Burt. “You’re in and out of the water really quick, and it’s worth it.”

The day kicked off with the Law Enforcement Torch Run. Local Special Olympics athletes and law enforcement carried the Flame of Hope as a part of the Opening Ceremony. This flame symbolizes courage and celebrates diversity uniting around the world.

Countless teams, many in unique costumes, plunged into the lake before going into a warming tent.

Various Polar Plunges across Kansas raise money for the Special Olympics every year. The proceeds help athletes compete in activities with people in an encouraging environment.
