I-70 closed for hours after fatal crash involving 4 cars across both directions of traffic
LEAVENWORTH COUNTY, Kan. (KCTV) - Interstate 70 was closed for several hours on Friday as crews worked to clear a devastating crash, the Kansas Highway Patrol reported.
The crash happened just after 5 p.m. on Feb. 21, northwest of Bonner Springs, Kansas, in Leavenworth County.
According to a report from KHP, a 17-year-old from Topeka was driving east on I-70 when she started ing a 53-year-old from Kansas City, Kansas, using the left lane. The 17-year-old driver drifted into the side of the 53-year-old’s car, causing him to lose control of his car.
The man drifted across the eastbound lanes and went over the median barrier wall. His car hit a 2016 Acura ILX driving the opposite way on I-70, causing the Acura to roll. The Acura then hit a fourth car that was also driving west in the outside lane of traffic.
Several injuries were reported, and one woman was killed:
- The first car was a 2013 Nissan Altima carrying the 17-year-old driver and her three engers, another 17-year-old, a 15-year-old, and a baby girl less than one. KHP said the driver was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital with suspected minor injuries, while none of her engers were reported as injured. All four were wearing appropriate safety restraints.
- The second car was a 2024 Isuzu driven by a 53-year-old KCK man. He had minor injuries and was taken to a hospital in Kansas City. He was wearing a seatbelt.
- The third car was a 2016 Acura ILX driven by a 63-year-old man from Abilene, Kansas. He was wearing a seatbelt and reported no injuries.
- The fourth car was a 2019 Infinity X50 driven by a 54-year-old Kansas City, Missouri, man. He suffered what were believed to be serious injuries while his enger, a 50-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at a Kansas City hospital approximately two hours after the crash. She has been identified as Lili McCann of KCMO and her next of kin was notified.
After the crash, all traffic was shut down on I-70 for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene. There is no further information at this time.
