Interstate 35 traffic stop turns manhunt after driver runs into woods

Kansas City, Kan. (KCTV) - A traffic stop escalated quickly for the Kansas Highway Patrol this morning along I-35 northbound and the 635 interchange near Merriam, Kansas.

Around 8:30 a.m. a patrolman radioed for backup after the driver he pulled over along the interstate jumped out of the car, running on foot into a nearby wooded area.

Upon further investigation, it was found the car he was driving had previously been reported stolen.

Along with the Highway Patrol, Mission and Shawnee police were called in along with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. K9 units and drone assistance were also used in the manhunt.

As of 11 a.m., law enforcement confirms no arrest has been made and the manhunt is ongoing.

Interstate traffic was backed up about a mile during the height of the search.
