Felony charges filed after car windows shattered in Downtown KC parking lot
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Shattered car windows in a Downtown Kansas City parking lot led to felony charges that have been filed against a Polo, Missouri, man.
Jackson County, Missouri, Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced on Thursday, Feb. 27, that charges have been filed against Daniel Keil, of Polo, after he allegedly shattered a handful of car windows in Downtown Kansas City earlier in the month.
Johnson noted that Keil has been charged with two counts of property damage in the first degree and two counts of property damage in the second degree.
Court records indicated that the Kansas City Police Department was called to a downtown parking lot on Feb. 2 with reports of multiple vehicle break-ins in progress. Witnesses reported Keil had broke the windows on several cars and ran north.
Law enforcement officials said they were able to locate the defendant near Truman Rd. and Main St., where they took him into custody. Officers found various vehicles in the parking lot that had damaged windows.
According to Missouri law, each property damage incident that exceeds $750 qualifies as a felony offense. Damages below the threshold are charged as misdemeanors.
In this case, Johnson noted that four victims provided documented damage estimates that allowed the Prosecutor’s Office to file appropriate charges. Detectives continue to gather more information on damages from other victims.
“Property crime creates significant financial hardship and inconvenience for far too many in our community,” said Prosecutor Johnson. “We appreciate the victims who came forward and documented their damages, which was crucial in ensuring appropriate charges are filed. Our office remains committed to holding property crime offenders able and will continue to work collaboratively with law enforcement to prosecute these cases to the fullest extent of the law.”
As of Thursday, Feb. 27, Keil does not appear to be behind bars. No further information has been released.
