KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - An annual inspection at a Kansas City apartment complex has residents now in need of new homes.

Wednesday afternoon, the Kansas City Fire Department gave residents at Cloverleaf Apartments a 48-hour deadline for evacuation, saying “living conditions at the property have become unsustainable,” in an email to KCTV.

The Kansas City Fire Department said an inspector went in person to Cloverleaf Apartments in an attempt to arrange an annual inspection because property management failed to return communication.

KCFD said a property manager had been incarcerated for reasons beyond their knowledge, leaving property management personnel without payment and residents on their own. The complex, with years of issues, held a meeting Wednesday to arrange for new housing for 76 residents who are in the system.

KCTV5 spoke with Destiny Moore, one of the 76 people told to evacuate the complex. She shared more about her living conditions and pointed out a leak on the bottom floor. “They were supposed to be remodeling, they were supposed to be fixing everything, they said they were going to fix everyone’s apartments. They didn’t.”

Moore went on to share that she has family to stay with until she can figure out a permanent living situation, but she’s worried about other tenants at the complex. “There are people living out here that don’t have anywhere to go,” Moore said. “They’ve been living here for more than seven years, I feel bad for them.”

Fire Department officials said an additional 20-25 people there through lease or who should not be living at the complex are also in need of a place to live. An organization serving in the place of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is working to relocate the 76 people on their list, KCFD said. Red Cross has been ordered to assist the others.

KCFD said a 24-hour fire watch has been posted at the apartment complex because some fire protection systems are not working.

Friday afternoon is now the deadline for residents to evacuate the property. Listed residents will be allowed entry to the complex over the weekend to finish securing their personal property, a KCFD official said.
