‘Thank the Lord that I’m still here’, man carjacked by Manning in KCK speaks out
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - Andrew Myers was leaving his friend’s house near 11th and Rowland in KCK around midnight when a man ran up to him. He and night of terror crime spree that ended when he was shot and killed by authorities in Riverside Friday morning.
“Guy came up and he said, uh, ‘I need a ride, I need a ride, I’m taking your truck’,” said Myers. “When he said that he showed he had a Glock, it was a big caliber gun.”
Myers’ friend, Thomas E. Barnes, says he watched Myers walk to his car, as he does whenever someone leaves his house, and as Myers went around his truck to the driver’s side, Barnes turned to go back in his home.
“As I closed my door, I heard a voice say, ‘Mr. Barnes, Mr. Barnes, Mr. Barnes’,” said Barnes. “I looked out and saw another man jump into the back of his truck. I assumed something was wrong.”
Myers hopped out of his truck, but as Manning jumped in, Myers said without thinking, he got back in the back of his truck as Manning took off.
“We went north on 11th St, up through Parkwood, up 10th St, down by Sunshine Biscuit, 7th St, I was yelling ‘let me out, let me out,’ and he pulled over,” said Myers. “Was polite enough to pull over and stop. I barreled out, and I ran up this hill because I didn’t know what his intentions were.”
Myers called 911 as Manning drove off; Manning later crashed the truck and abandoned it. He carjacked someone else at a gas station on Quindaro just before 6 a.m. KCKPD says he left town shortly after.
Barnes says when he realized something wasn’t right, he got his coat on and took off after them in his car. He says he found his friend after he had gotten out of the truck and called the police.
“I didn’t know everything else that had happened,” said Barnes. “We spent a lot of time talking to the police. We were wondering why it was taking them so long to get an answer, we thought it was just someone who had robbed a truck and took off. One of the nice policemen said ‘You know what? You’re very lucky. He hurt somebody.’ We said ‘What do you mean, hurt somebody?’ They just told us he hurt people, they didn’t say he had shot and killed people.”
After hearing everything authorities say Manning did, Myers says he is grateful to be alive.
“I just thank the Lord that I’m still here,” said Myers.
