KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Hundreds of Evergy crews are in the midst of 16-hour shifts as they work to restore power to thousands in the metro following an overnight blizzard.

Evergy, the electric utility company, says that on Wednesday, March 5, more than 1,000 employees and contractors are working around the clock to restore power to thousands of customers after a blizzard tore down powerlines across both states overnight.

Crews said they continued their efforts through high winds after power to nearly 190,000 customers went out. As of 3:30 p.m., 10,000 customers remain without power.

According to Evergy, communities with the most damage include the Kansas City metro, Lawrence, St. Joseph and Topeka. Those in the St. Joseph area can refer to the Outage Map for updated restoration times.

Meanwhile, company leaders indicated that those in Atchison, Lawrence, Topeka, Shawnee, Leavenworth, Wichta and Emporia can expect their electricity to be restored later tonight. Those in Blue Springs, the Northland, Mound City and Platte City can expect restoration by late Thursday morning.

Lastly, crews noted that remaining outages from the storm - particularly in St. Joseph, Lee’s Summit and south of the river in the Kansas City Metro - should be restored by Thursday evening.

Evergy noted that the storm left significant damage in its wake, with downed powerlines and limbs. Crews will continue to work as safely and quickly as possible. Those who do come across a downed line should stay at least 30 feet away from it and assume it is still energized.
