Fire Captain declared deceased after collapsing at scene of weekend call

JOHNSON CO., Mo. (KCTV) - A Missouri Fire Captain was tragically pronounced deceased after he collapsed at the scene of a call over the weekend.

The Johnson County Fire Protection District has announced that Captain Vernon Collett has died in the line of duty. He collapsed while attempting to fight a natural cover fire on Saturday afternoon, March 8.

Despite nearly an hour of lifesaving efforts at the scene, JCFPD noted that t. Collett was tragically declared deceased. He dedicated nearly 30 years of service to the community.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Captain Collett’s family, friends and colleagues,” a spokesperson for the District said. “We ask that the community keep them in their thoughts during this difficult time.”

No additional information has been released as the grieving processes of family and friends have been asked to be respected. Memorial information will be announced when those plans are determined.
