Blue Valley School District reevaluates sex offender policy
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (KCTV) - Currently, there is no law in Kansas or Missouri prohibiting ed sex offenders from being near schools. This fact has led to some upheaval in the Blue Valley School District, and some parents say they want their kids better protected.
It started after some parents saw a man taking pictures at a school dance at Blue River Elementary on Feb. 8. The man is on the sex offender registry for distribution or receipt of internet child pornography.
Blue Valley told KCTV the man in question is the boyfriend of a parent who was permitted access after going through proper channels with the school istration.
Some parents took to social media, sharing their disdain for what they feel is a lack of proper policy in place at the district level.
Since that time, the school board introduced a new district policy draft at their March 3 board meeting. The policy would prevent convicted offenders from attending school-sponsored activities unless certain school officials grant permission in extraordinary circumstances.
The district says they appreciate the parent involvement.
In of parents, Senate Bill 288, introduced by Kansas State Senator Kellie Warren, would make it a felony for adult sex offenders to enter school property or attend certain school activities in the state of Kansas.
Although Kansas does not have a law that mandates where sex offenders can or cannot live, work, or go to school, courts can restrict ed sex offenders from living near parks or schools if they are deemed higher risk.
Blue Valley School District’s next scheduled board meeting is set for April 14, where further is expected.
