Lenexa voters to decide future of 3-8th cent sales tax to fund city projects
LENEXA, Kan. (KCTV) - Voters in Lenexa have one day left to weigh in on a special election.
It is being held to determine whether the city’s 3/8-cent sales tax should be renewed. If approved, the sales tax would be collected for an additional 20 years.
ers point out that this isn’t a new tax, it is an extension of a tax that is already being collected. in 2024, the sales tax is expected to raise about $10 million, according to the city.
Money raised from the tax have been used to pay for the following projects, according to Lenexa:
- Lenexa Rec Center and civic campus parking garage
- Sar-Ko-Par Aquatic Center reconstruction
- Ad Astra Pool reconstruction
- Renovations at Lenexa Old Town Activity Center
- Replacement of playground equipment in City parks
- Trails
The city said the tax will be used to fund road repairs and maintenance, improve city parks, and invest in other recreational opportunities.
This is what the ballot asks:

Voting “yes” is in favor of extending the sales tax through 2048. A “no” vote is against extending the sales tax. The tax is currently set to expire Sept. 30, 2028.
Ballots must either be returned to the Johnson County Election Office, or mailed so it arrives at the election office, by 12 p.m. on April 1.
