18-year-old faces charges for hijacked vehicle after high-speed chase in KC
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - An 18-year-old has been arrested and charged for a vehicle hijacking that happened months ago after a high-speed chase in Kansas City.
Jackson County, Missouri, Circuit Court records filed on Friday, March 7, indicate that Yakub Mohamad-Kasin, 18, of Kansas City, has been charged in connection to a months-old vehicle hijacking and high-speed chase through the metro.
A probable cause statement filed by the Kansas City Police Department revealed that around 9:20 p.m. on Aug. 10, 2024, law enforcement officials were called to Up N Smoke at 5110 Independence Ave. with reports of an armed robbery.
When first responders arrived, they said they found the victim who reported he had been parked in his 2013 black Ford Fiesta when three individuals, one of whom was later identified as Mohamad-Kasin, approached him. Two of the men pointed firearms at his head while the other pointed a gun at his chest.
The victim reported that the men, whom he previously knew from a church group when they lived in Burma, forced him out of his vehicle and stole it. He was able to positively identify all three individuals.
Investigators indicated that the Ford was found abandoned on Aug. 15 and was towed to a city lot. However, it was not until March 6, 2025, that law enforcement officials were called to an area of Cliff Dr. north of Kessler Park with reports of a shooting. There, they found Mohamad-Kasim and arrested him.
Law enforcement officials said that when they arrived at the intersection of Gladstone and Walrond Ave., near the park, they found a black Infinity car. When they attempted to speak with the driver, later identified as Mohamad-Kasim, he sped off.
Ultimately, KD said Mohamad-Kasim was brought to a stop about 55 blocks away after he sped in excess of 100 mph in a residential neighborhood, drove the wrong way on a one-way street and drove into oncoming traffic.
As a result, Mohamad-Kasim was charged with vehicle hijacking, armed criminal action and resisting arrest. If convicted, he could spend up to 49 years behind bars. As of Thursday, March 13, he remains behind bars on a $250,000 bond.
A bond review hearing has been scheduled for 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18, with a preliminary hearing expected at 2 p.m. on April 9. No further information, including the identities of the other two individuals, has been released.
