KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - It’s an expensive time of year to have a student with graduation, school dances and preparing to have them home for the next few months. This is why community partners say they’re working to take the burden off parents and benefit from community doing some spring cleaning.

The 10th annual Project Cinderella’s Closet and Man of the Hour Initiative. This provides clothing, shoes, undergarments, accessories, toiletries and beauty supplies to teens so they can have the prom night they’ve always dreamed of. All of these come from community donations, clothing drives and partnerships in the community.

Founder Jessica Bentley-Johnson started the nonprofit after falling on hard times herself. She says she made it her mission to help others through the Urban Community Connection and it’s working.

“Donating those things to organizations like UCC and all the other amazing groups here in the city that’s doing prom initiatives, it really brings joy and again takes that barrier and burden off of these students and their families. we never want a family to choose between whether they’re going to be able to eat for the week or if we’re going to be able to send our kid to prom or graduation,” she said.

Each month, the Urban Community Connection holds an event to help people in the community. These events require volunteers, something they’re always in need of. Donations for prom supplies are also still being collected through an Amazon Wishlist. You can learn more about ways to help here.
