TOPEKA, Kan. (KCTV) - The Kansas Department of Health and Environment issued an Air Quality Health Advisory on March 14 due to extreme winds pushing dust and smoke throughout the state.

A low-pressure system is bringing strong winds into the state, which started in the afternoon and will continue into the evening.

The winds will transport dust and smoke from wildfires in Oklahoma and Eastern Kansas into the area.

At times, the Air Quality Index (AQI) could range from Unhealthy to even Hazardous.

Current air quality, AQI and fire activity throughout Kansas can be viewed by clicking here.

The following are tips to protect yourself and others:

  • If you are healthy, limit or avoid outdoor exercise
  • If you are vulnerable to poor air quality, remain indoors
  • Close doors, windows and running air conditioners with air filters to keep indoor air healthier
  • Stay hydrated
  • If you have symptoms like chest pains or chest tightness, shortness of breath or severe fatigue, your doctor.
