Possible blizzard conditions Wednesday, elevated to First Warn Weather Day
We have decided to upgrade Wednesday to a First Warn Weather Day. Our confidence is growing for a large storm system to through the region. It will bring a few rain showers first, and then as temperatures plummet, a transition over to snow is expected. The current thinking is the transition timeframe to snow is sometime in the afternoon on Wednesday. There will likely be at least a few hour window of snow as temperatures dip in the 30s, and we need to watch the evening commute for impacts. While the ground will be warm, some minor accumulation is possible in grassy and elevated surfaces. We are thinking up to an inch of snow at this time, potentially to two inches in northwest Missouri. Should not stick much to the roadways, at least not initially. The biggest concern we have is reduced visibility with winds gusting 50+ mph from the northwest.
This will come as a major shock, as Tuesday will be exceptionally warm. The morning low in the mid-50s is roughly our average afternoon high. Our temperatures will top out near 80 by roughly 4 pm, which is common for the end of May. It will be a windy day with southwest gusts up to 40 mph, which will stoke a High Fire Danger. Windy and warm days, combined with our still-dry winter vegetation, make ripe conditions for fires to start easily and spread rapidly. We will be dry but likely won’t see an abundance of sunshine.
