KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The company legally appointed to oversee an Independence apartment complex asks a judge to allow it to sell the property.

Trigild Inc. was appointed as general receiver to oversee Independence Towers in May 2024.

The company filed an emergency motion in Jackson County Court Monday. The filing asks for a judge to allow it to sell the apartment building.

The Independence Towers Tenant Union, which represents some of the people who live in the building, said it learned March 17 about the emergency filing.

According to the union, Trigild Inc. hopes to sell the property to a company named PG Independence Tower LLC.

Online records show PG Independence Tower LLC is ed to an agent in Indiana. The filing shows the LLC was created on March 11, 2025.

tenants who live there.

Some of the tenants formed a union and went on a rent strike Oct. 1, 2024.

In the months since the strike began, the union said Fannie Mae invested $1.35 million in the building. Instead of using the money to fix the larger issues with the building, the union said Tirgild is using the money to make more cosmetic fixes.

The tenant union is demanding that it is included in selecting a new owner of the building as well as the option of collectively bargaining leases with the new owners.

“We are not pawns for buyers and sellers to toss around. We are tenants, and this is our home. Even though we have been forced to endure unthinkable conditions here, we have organized and fought for Independence Towers. The future of this property depends on our rent. We will not stop organizing until we have the agency we deserve, and until we negotiate a lease that protects us,” the Independence Towers Tenants Union said in a statement.

Online court records show there is a hearing scheduled Friday afternoon to hear the emergency request to sell the building.
