WINTER PARK, Colo. (KCTV) - A Spring Break trip to the mountains of Colorado ended in fatal tragedy after a 20-year-old skier from Kansas collided with a tree.
The Fraser Winter Park Police Department says that around 10:50 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18, the Winter Park Ski Patrol was alerted to a skier who ran into a tree on Lupin, an intermediate/advanced trail at the resort.
Ski Patrol said teams immediately responded. They arrived to find guests on the scene who had already started R. Emergency crews took over resuscitation efforts and took the injured guest, identified as Andrew McDonald, 20, of Shawnee, to Denver Health Winter Park Medical Center at the base of the resort.
Ultimately, McDonald was pronounced deceased by medical professionals. Law enforcement officials said he was wearing a helmet at the time of the impact.
“We the Winter Park Resort in extending our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the man’s family and friends during this extremely difficult time,” said a spokesperson for the Police Department.
Earlier in the day, the National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of Grand County, where the resort is located, as up to 10 inches of snowfall had been expected in some places. There has been no indication that weather played a part.
