Fire investigators said Friday morning that the fire may have started by improper discarding of smoking materials. They also said the dry conditions and wind allowed the fire to spread quickly.

The 14 people inside the building when the fire started escaped safely. Others who lived in the building were not home at the time. All of the residents lost the majority of their belongings in the fire.

Strangers and community groups are now stepping in to help with the recovery.

People dropped off clothing, household times and other donations at City Thrift in Blue Springs Thursday afternoon. The business is holding a second collection for The Lodge fire victims Friday afternoon and evening.

Organizers of the drive said they are in need of hygiene supplies and feminine products.
