ST. PETERS, Mo. (KMOV/Gray News) – A 4-year-old boy was killed when he was thrown from a motorcycle Sunday afternoon in Missouri.

Police said the crash happened around 5 p.m. on Mexico Road in St. Peters, which is about 35 miles northwest of St. Louis.

A man and the child were riding on a motorcycle when they hit a utility pole. Police said both were thrown from the motorcycle.

The 4-year-old was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The man was also taken to a hospital with critical but non-life-threatening injuries.

Both were wearing helmets, police said. They have not been publicly identified.

According to the Motorcycle Legal Foundation, there is no minimum age limit in Missouri for engers riding on a motorcycle.

In fact, only five U.S. states have laws that state a minimum age limit for motorcycle engers. In Texas, Louisiana and Washington, a child must be at least 5 years old. In Hawaii, a child must be at least 7, and in Arkansas, they must be at least 8.

A Missouri law firm, who is not involved with this crash, said while there isn’t a minimum age for engers in the state, drivers should “use common sense.”

“Small children are not safe on the back (or anywhere) on a motorcycle,” the Foster Wallace website reads.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, police said.
