KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - On Wednesday, the City of Kansas City announced it’s one step closer to the goal of eradicating illegal street racing and sideshows.

The City Council ed Ordinance 240724 in September 2024, strengthening its stance against the “nuisance” gatherings. The ordinance laid the groundwork for issuing drivers increased fines if caught and having their cars confiscated.

“We want to make sure that when officers are breaking things up, it isn’t just everybody just driving on to the next place, but it’s actually making sure that people know that there are real penalties to engage in this type of activity,” Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said at the time.

Now, several months later, the increased fines have been finalized and are in effect as of April 2, 2025. According to a release, vehicles involved in the illegal sideshows and street races will be subject to the following fees:

  • First offense: $500
  • Second offense: $750
  • Third offense: $1,000

The ordinance gives Kansas City Police Department officers the authority to determine how severe a person’s penalty should be based on their prior infractions and the severity of their offense. Spectators within 200 feet of illegal activity are also subject to the penalties.

According to the release, 13 vehicles have already been towed since the ordinance was ed.

“These new fees send a clear message: Kansas City streets are not the place for stunts, high-speed exhibitions, or reckless behavior,” Lucas said in Wednesday’s release.
