Royals Foundation unveils Kansas City Public Schools’ first-ever baseball & softball field
“This field is more than just a place to play. It shows how much people care .”
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - With the snip of a ribbon Wednesday morning, Primitivo Garcia Elementary School’s new baseball and softball field is officially ready for action.
“I cannot wait to learn new skills, have fun with my friends, and maybe even dream about being a Kansas City Royal one day,” fifth-grader Casey Jackson said.
“‘When you look at this young man that spoke to us today, that’s the future,” Royals chairman and CEO John Sherman said of Jackson. “That’s the future of our city, and we want them to have big dreams.”
Dreams can now become reality at the first baseball and softball-specific facility the Kansas City Public Schools district has ever had.
“This day for me is opportunity. It’s access,” principal Jaqueline Tanner said. “Baseball means a lot to our community. Just have access to that, it’s somewhere the kids have to play — a safe place.”
The roughly $107,000 project is funded by the Royals Foundation’s Royalty Fields Program, which helps renovate youth facilities across the Midwest.

“Play is part of education,” Sherman said. “Physical health, mental health, and the whole person. The life skills that you learn from sports are definitely part of education.”
“This field is more than just a place to play,” Jackson said. “It shows how much people care , our school, our neighborhood, and our future. So thank you for believing in us and giving us this incredible opportunity. I promise we will take good care of this field and make you proud.”
