LAWRENCE, Kan. (KCTV) - The family of a fallen soldier has been gifted a pristine home in the lovely Lawrence, Kansas, without a mortgage to worry about.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation says that in honor of Gold Star Spouses Day, on April 5, have provided the family of fallen Army Sergeant Joel Murray with a brand new, mortgage-free home in Lawrence.

Foundation leaders noted that Gold Star Spouses Day honors the husbands and wives of military who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation. Sgt. Murray and three of his unit were killed while on deployment on Sept. 4, 2007. An improvised explosive device that hit their Humvee was to blame.

According to Tunnel to Towers, Murray was just 26 years old at the time. He came from a military family, and in February 2002 - just months after the attack of 9/11 - he enlisted in the Army. His first deployment was to Seoul, South Korea, where he met his wife, Maricel.

“Joel was my soulmate. He was a good man and provided not only for me and our son but for my family as well. He had a heart of gold,” said Maricel Murray.

Tunnel to Towers noted that Murray is survived by his wife and their son, Jerry, who is now a pre-med student and graduated in the top 1% of his class. Maricel added that Jerry always “tried to excel in school to honor his father’s legacy.”
