Red Cross shelters open as Missourians emerge from severe storms
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Shelters have opened across the Show-Me State as several communities continue to wade through the debris severe storms left in their wake.
The affected areas. Distribution areas for emergency supplies have also been opened to assist community .
The Red Cross said its role in any disaster is to focus on the immediate needs of those affected. The organization has been in coordination with the affected communities to find where and when additional assistance will be expected.
Organization leaders noted that the following shelters have opened for affected Missourians:
- The Community Center Shelter, 200 N. Ash St., Nevada
- Delta High School, 324 N. Liberty St., Delta
- The Community Partner Shelter - Potosi Southern Baptist Church, 10165 Missouri Highway 8, Potosi
The Red Cross indicated that identification and proof of residency would not be required for ittance to the shelters. Services are free and available to all regardless of race, religious belief, nationality or citizenship status.
Meanwhile, organization said strong storms and flooding are expected to persist across the Show-Me State over the next several days. Residents have been warned to take safety precautions early.





The Red Cross has issued the following tips:
- Save phone calls for emergencies and use text messaging or social media to communicate instead.
- A flood or flash flood watch means flooding is possible. Residents should stay alert. A warning, however, means flooding is happening or is imminent.
- Plan for safety, as flash floods can happen fast. Residents should have an evacuation plan and know where to go for higher ground.
- Stay informed and follow local emergency management updates to be ready to act.
- the Red Cross Emergency App for updates and preparedness information.
- Wear appropriate gear during clean-ups, such as thick-soled shoes, long pants and work gloves. Use appropriate face coverings or masks if cleaning mold or other debris.
