Double homicide in KCK: Police chief shares strong message after drug deal turned robbery
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - Two people are dead and two others were hurt after a shooting over the weekend in KCK.
It happened Saturday night near the College Park Townhomes community, which is just south of the KCK Community College Campus.
Nineteen-year-old Javon Brown and 20-year-old DeLorean Jackson were killed in the shooting.
On Monday afternoon, KCK Police held a press conference and released information on what led up to the shooting.
Police Chief Karl Oakman said the shooting was not random. It was a drug deal that turned into a violent robbery.
Oakman said three individuals, which included Brown and Jackson, went to a home to buy drugs. They decided to rob the drug dealer, which resulted in a shoot-out.
Oakman said that drugs are an issue in KCK.
“Whether its cocaine, meth or fentanyl, our narcotics team, as well as working with the DEA and are partners with ATF are doing what we can to focus on these individuals that are trafficking these drugs,” said Oakman.
KCK Police just completed an operation last week where they seized 77 grams of cocaine, 48 meth and ecstasy pills, 1,402 grams of marijuana, 15 firearms, and $5,228.
Chief Oakman said work like that is far from over.
“The same individuals that were involved in a lot of the violent gang activity are some of the same individuals involved in the fentanyl trade,” he said, “we’re coming at them at every angle we can possibly go after them.”
Oakman said he wants the complex where the shooting happened to know they’re going to see a lot of recourses to get it cleaned up, like they have with other neighborhoods.
“We look forward to really working with those neighbors in those neighborhoods that want change, and we’ll get them the change that they want,” said Oakman.
As for others who are selling and trafficking drugs, Oakman’s message is clear.
“Here’s the message to you: we know about you, we’re going to come and get you, and we’re going to put you in jail.”
Residents where the shooting occurred said they notice drugs being an issue in their neighborhood.
“I don’t think it’s a lot of gang violence here; I think it’s a lot of drugs and fentanyl s and things of that sort,” said Briyana Hill.
Briyana Hill, a resident and owner of a local business, Loc’ed with Bri, has lived in this neighborhood since she was 11 years old and said she’s worried about the shooting that killed two people.
“It’s surprising because, yeah, people don’t normally die out here, so it’s pretty shocking.”
Police said the other two individuals involved in the shooting have been taken into custody and are awaiting charges.
KCK Police will be holding a Peace Walk on Saturday, April 7, to help stop crime from happening in more neighborhoods.
