CAMDENTON, Mo. (KCTV) - A beloved K-9 partner tragically met his end after he was hit by a vehicle during a routine training exercise in rural Central Missouri.

The Camden County, Missouri, Sheriff’s Office announced on Wednesday, April 9, that it now mourns the loss of K-9 Deputy Shadow, a beloved partner to Deputy Dylan Rice and member of his family.

The Sheriff’s Office indicated that Shadow, a German Shepherd, had been hit by a driver as he and his handler conducted routine training near his home on Sunday evening. Tragically, Shadow succumbed to his injuries.

Agency leadership noted that Shadow ed the Sheriff’s Office in 2023 and served the community with disticintion. He was a dual purpose K-9 trained to patrol - track, apprehend and protect - and detect narcotics.

“Deputy Shadow was a friend to all our deputies and a loyal partner to Deputy Dylan Rice. Shadow was a valuable asset to our department and a true friend to our community,” said Sheriff Chris Edgar. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Dylan and his family and we ask for the public’s help in respecting their privacy during this difficult time.”
