Arrest warrants filed for pair behind October attempted robbery, kidnapping
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A man and woman have been charged in connection to an alleged attempt to kidnap and rob a victim at an area hotel before they led investigators on a high-speed chase.
Jackson County, Missouri, Circuit Court records filed on Tuesday, April 8, indicate that Heather N. Hodges, 26, and Sergio Marquez, 34, both of Kansas City, have been charged in connection to the incident.
A probable cause statement filed by the Kansas City Police Department revealed that around 9 a.m. on Oct. 3, 2024, law enforcement officials were called to an area hotel with reports of a disturbance.
When first responders arrived, they said they found a victim who reported a group of individuals stole money from him. He enlisted the help of Hodges and Marquez to get his money back. Marquez had been armed with a gun, but instead of helping the victim, the pair allegedly turned on him.
The victim reported that Marquez forced him into the back of a nearby Jetta at gunpoint. Once inside, the victim was forced to get naked. Ultimately, a struggle ensued over the firearm, which caused Hodges and Marquez to flee in the Jetta. Surveillance footage from the hotel corroborated the victim’s timeline.
As investigators conducted a follow-up investigation at the hotel, they said they saw the suspect vehicle in the parking lot as Hodges and Marquez quickly entered. When they attempted to pull Marquez, the driver, over, he refused to stop and spurred a high-speed chase down I-70 at Van Brunt Blvd.
Eventually, law enforcement officials said they chased the pair to a home in Kansas City, Kansas, where they bailed from the vehicle and ran into a nearby home. Shortly after, they came back out and got back into the Jetta before they sped north on I-635 to Platte County.
However, at the intersection of I-635 and I-29, Marquez crashed the car before he and Hodges were taken into custody. They were taken to North Kansas City Hospital with minor injuries from the crash under police supervision.
During separate interviews, Marquez itted he had been at the scene with Hodges and that a struggle had ensued, but had attempted to pin the incident on the victim. Hodges told investigators she did not anything about the incident.
As a result, Hodges has been charged with attempted robbery, accessory to kidnapping and two counts of armed criminal action. If convicted, she could spend more than 50 years behind bars.
