KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Law enforcement has asked the public for help in identifying a driver on an all-terrain vehicle who ran over a police officer in downtown Kansas City, Missouri.

Just before 7 p.m. on Saturday, an officer with the Kansas City Police Department had attempted to place tire deflation devices to deter offroad motorized bicycles and an ATV from performing stunts and driving erratically, KD Chief Stacey Graves said.

At the intersection of East Truman Road and South Main Street, near the Crossroads, the police officer tried to take the ATV driver into custody, “when the driver backed up, brought the ATV into a wheelie and struck our officer, landing atop our officer, and then continued to drive over him as he fled the scene,” Graves added.

The driver evaded law enforcement through the Crossroads and went onto southbound I-35 — driving northbound.

Law enforcement lost sight of the driver, and he has not been seen since. Graves pleaded with the Kansas City community to relay any information connected with the incident to police and to the TIPS hotline: (816) 474-TIPS.

Graves said the department will continue deploying tactical response teams, helicopters and teams of officers. She said lawmakers have already created harsher penalties, including fines and jail time, but more can still be done.

“We are in discussion with city officials to add additional cameras, automatic license plate readers, fencing and gates in areas in and around downtown,” Graves said.

The police department released the photo below in hopes of the public recognizing the person involved.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas announced on Sunday the officer had been released from the hospital and was recovering at home.

Business owners say something has to be done to make the area safer for people who work and visit.

Tracy Hung, an employee at Pokesan near Tuman and Grand believes that if something doesn’t change, things will only get worse.

“They think they’re above the law,” Hung said. “If that’s not enough to raise awareness, I don’t know what it takes. Truthfully, anything that happens now, anything bad that happens, we’re just like ah ok another thing.”

KCTV5 interviewed her when the city first put grooves down in the middle of the intersection to help prevent this activity.

“They still do donuts out here with the grooves too, nothing has helped,” Hung said.

As of Monday evening Kansas City police said they had not arrested the person on the ATV and continue looking for that person.
