Streetcar updates: Riverfront Extension nears track completion, Main Street under testing
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Piece by piece, the KC Streetcar’s extension projects are nearing completion.
On April 16, the KC Streetcar Authority announced that 100 percent of track construction for the Riverfront Extension will be completed in just one week.
The project broke ground 14 months ago and covers 0.7 miles just below the Missouri River, starting at 3rd Street and Grand Boulevard and ending midway through the Berkley Riverfront.
A specific date for the opening of the Riverfront track has not been provided, but the project’s website states that it is estimated to take around two years, putting the grand opening sometime around February 2026.

Meanwhile, the Main Street Extension on the opposite side of the track is nearing an opening date as crews work to complete testing and shore up loose ends, such as resurfacing surrounding roads.
This extension will add three and a half miles starting at Union Station (Main Street and E. Pershing Road) and ending at the University of Missouri- Kansas City campus (E. 51st Street and Brookside Boulevard).
Track construction was completed in November 2024 after two and a half years, but it still has several months to go. Its opening date is not expected until fall 2025.
