Woman, 83, arrested for deadly hit-and-run, police say
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB/Gray News) – An 83-year-old woman was arrested in connection with a deadly hit-and-run that happened in Connecticut in November.
West Hartford police said they arrested 83-year-old Sue Deffenbaugh on charges of evading responsibility and failure to exercise reasonable care near a vulnerable on a public way.
The crash happened on Nov. 8, 2024.
On that day, police said they responded to an intersection for a report of a vehicle hitting a pedestrian.
They found that a driver struck a pedestrian who was crossing Oakwood Avenue at a crosswalk.
After the impact with the first vehicle, the pedestrian was hit by a second vehicle.
Police said the driver of the first vehicle remained on the scene and cooperated with the investigation, but the second vehicle drove away.
The pedestrian died at the hospital.
After a months-long investigation, police said they identified the driver of the second vehicle as Deffenbaugh.
She was arrested on Tuesday.
The warrant carried a $400,000 court-set bond and a stipulation that she not be allowed to drive.
Deffenbaugh is scheduled to appear in court April 24.
