KC man held on $100K bond after accused of hijacking car with an axe
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A Kansas City man has been arrested and charged after he allegedly attacked a man, came back with an accomplice and stole his car with an axe.
Jackson County, Missouri, Circuit Court records filed on Monday, April 14, indicate that Kelvin A. Lopez-Leonardo, 30, of Kansas City, has been charged after he allegedly stole a man’s vehicle with an axe.
A probable cause statement filed by the Kansas City Police Department revealed that just after 8:35 p.m. on Sunday, law enforcement officials received reports of a disturbance. They discovered a 2009 white Nissan Murano had been carjacked at gunpoint.
When investigators arrived at the scene, they said they found a victim who reported that around 4:30 p.m., he had been outside his home when he was approached by Lopez-Leonardo. The two began to fight as the victim’s arm was sliced by a beer bottle. Lopez-Leonardo ran off as police were called.
However, the victim reported that Lopez-Leonardo returned with his brother later in the day after law enforcement officials left. Lopez-Leonardo allegedly threatened the victim with an axe as he ran and left the keys inside his vehicle. When he returned, his car had been stolen.
Around 10:05 p.m. on Sunday, law enforcement officials said they spotted the stolen vehicle with Lopez-Leonardo inside. He was stopped and taken into custody without complication.
Investigators noted that a search of the stolen vehicle revealed multiple weapons, including firearms, ammunition, a small axe and a machete. All of the weapons allegedly had traces of blood on them.
During an interview with law enforcement officials, they said Lopez-Leonardo said he had taken the car as the victim had not paid him for it in its entirety. However, he denied the use of any weapons or that he attacked the victim.
As a result, Lopez-Leonardo has been charged with robbery in the first degree and armed criminal action. If convicted, he could spend up to life in prison. A bond review hearing has been scheduled for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22, with a preliminary hearing expected at 1 p.m. on May 14.
As of Friday, April 18, Lopez-Leonardo remains behind bars on a $100,000 bond. No further information has been released.
