Motorcyclist killed, another motorcyclist injured in separate crashes

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (KCTV) - The Independence Police Department is investigating two motorcycle crashes that occurred on westbound US 24 Highway, just before Elsea Smith Road. The crashes took place on Thursday, April 17th, at approximately 11:30 p.m.
The first crash: A westbound motorcycle veered off the highway and hit a utility pole. The driver died on impact.
The second crash: Transpired in the same vicinity, another motorcycle driver saw the first crash, tried to stop, lost control and crashed nearby. That driver was taken to the hospital but is expected to recover.
Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that excessive speed was a contributing factor in both crashes.
