Second defendant pleads guilty after abandoned dog found in Kansas ditch
LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (KCTV) - A second defendant has pleaded guilty after an abandoned dog was found covered in feces and locked in a kennel in a ditch in Kansas.
The Leavenworth County, Kansas, Attorney’s Office announced on Friday, April 18, that Tayler E. Holecek, 23, has pleaded guilty as the second defendant in a case that involves an abandoned dog.
Court documents indicated that Holecek entered a guilty plea on Wednesday. Co-defendant Maleena L. Glenn, 23, pleaded guilty to the same charge earlier in January.
Court records revealed that a erby discovered the abandoned dog in a kennel near 167th and Hildebrandt Rd. The dog and kennel were both covered in feces. When the resident took photos and shared them in a Facebook post, the Leavenworth County Humane Society’s attention was caught.
Investigators noted that a humane society volunteer scanned the dog for a microchip and identified Holecek as the listed owner. They met with Holaceck and Glenn, his fiancée, on Nov. 25, 1 day after the dog was found.
Law enforcement officials’ reports from the interview indicated that the couple itted they abandoned the dog while their 4-year-old daughter and another man remained in the truck. They said they did it because they were frustrated with the canine.
“This is illegal,” Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson said in a statement. “There are better, more humane ways of surrendering your family pet. Please call a local animal control facility or shelter. I want to thank our witness and the Leavenworth County Humane Society for helping save this dog.”
