Patios, farmers’ market and more: Significant changes coming to 18th and Vine District
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - After years of discussions and planning, a pedestrian mall will soon open from The Paseo to Woodland Avenue on 18th Street.
According to Kansas City officials, the project will start in May 2025, and is expected to be completed by June 2026, in time for the World Cup.
According to the project overview, construction of the 18th Street Pedestrian Mall project is funded by $4 million secured by Congressman Emanuel Cleaver and over $2 million approved by Kansas City, Missouri.
The project will include a number of programming and streetscape improvements:
- Outdoor patios
- Farmer’s market
- Blues Fest/live concerts
- Fountain at The Paseo or Woodland
- Security (cameras)
- Lighting (more creative)
- Trash cans/recycle bins
One of the biggest changes will be replacing parking spaces on 18th Street with pedestrian walkways.
New parking facilities will be added one street over on 17th Terrace. Because of the renovations, there will be plenty of construction in the area, likely shutting down blocks at a time on 18th St.
Arthur Bryant’s general manager Taylor Tobin said this will be an inconvenience in the short term, but the changes will be worth it in the long run.
“It’s going to bring more people into the neighborhood, which is good for everybody around, not just us,” Tobin said. “I’m excited to see new faces, I’m excited to see more traffic. I think it’ll bring more attention to the area, a safer feel and more tourists to experience everything that has been going on here for the last 80 to 100 years.”
