Kansas exceeds national average for SNAP payment errors
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The state’s first meeting for the Select House Committee on government oversight shined light on error in processing for Kansas Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program applications.
In 2023, Kansas had a payment error rate of more than 12 percent for SNAP applications. That sured the national average of around 11 percent.
The federal government has pushed for reform.
After improving in 2023, Kansas fell back to an error rate of more than 12 percent in 2024. So far in 2025, the error rate is closer to the national average. Now one Kansas representative is questioning the Department of Children and Families’ handling of the program.
“We will require additional training,” Carla Whiteside-Hicks said. “We review the training materials, maybe the training materials aren’t clear and so eligibility workers are not understanding how to perform these tasks. If it is an individual or an office, we do situational case reviews, so again we go back to the root cause and try to address it that way.”
DCF representatives said they’d like to see the error rate drop to around 3 percent in the future.
