BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB/Gray News) - A Louisiana mother is living every parent’s worst nightmare after her 3-year-old son was shot while playing outside their home.

Trentavous Lewis, a 3-year-old boy also known as “Tren Tren,” was outside with his cousins last Tuesday evening when someone started shooting outside his Baton Rouge home, WAFB reports.

“We see a group of boys that looked like teenagers walking up the road with their guns out,” said Trentavous’ mother, Breniya Lewis. “Before I could even tell him, ‘Come on, Tren,’ they started shooting.”

Trentavous, who has autism and is nonverbal, was caught in the crossfire between two groups his family says they did not know. He was struck twice – once in the chest and once in the stomach.

“The boys looked me right in my face. After they got done shooting, they looked me in my face and just ran,” Lewis said.

The 3-year-old faces a long and difficult recovery. His mother says he will have to relearn how to walk, eat and use the restroom.

“No child should ever have to go through this,” she said.

Lewis says she is too afraid to return to her home and wants to leave Baton Rouge altogether, but she says there’s one thing keeping her here: justice for her son.

“That’s all I want. The people that did this to my baby,” she said. “I don’t want nothing else. I don’t care about names. I just want the people that did this to my baby. Man up and just own up to what you did.”

No arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to Baton Rouge Police or Crime Stoppers at (225)-344-7867.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family.
