Pres. Trump reconsiders tariffs against China
Following reports of reductions, the president emphasizes fairness
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - The White House is reportedly considering a significant de-escalation in the ongoing trade war.
It appears that the president has been softening his tone on tariffs with Beijing, which is of course is very significant given how much America relies on trade and getting goods from China.
Over the 24 hours, President Donald Trump said things like he’s not seeking to play hardball with China. He also said that the 145 percent tariffs on Chinese goods could come down substantially.
President Trump remains confident, tariffs will increase federal government revenues and that countries want to make a deal to have access to American markets.
“I think we’re going to make so much that we’re going to be able to reduce taxes in this country by a lot. And we’re also going to treat those countries very fairly. But if we don’t make a deal, which is possible, we’re going to just set the price because you they have to come in, they want to come in here and they want to do business with the United States. So we want to set a fair price and we’ll do that. We’re going to be very fair, but we’ll set a fair price. And they can make a determination as to whether or not they want to do business with the United States. And I think most of them will, and I think we’re going to treat them very fairly.”
Earlier, the Wall Street Journal reported, tariffs laid against China may come down as much as between 50 and 65 percent.
Reporters asked President Trump about that, after he toured the North Lawn for the placement of proposed flag poles.
“You clarify, Mr. President, on China?”
President Trump: “Yeah, we are going to have a fair deal with China. That’s going to be fair”
Reporter: “Are you talking to them actively now and actively?”
President Trump: Everything’s active. Everybody wants to be a part of what we’re doing. They know that they can’t get away with it any longer, but they’re still going to do fine. And we’re going to have a country that you can be proud of, not a laughingstock all over the world. For many years.”
The stock markets responded positively to that report in the Wall Street Journal and to the president’s repeated comments about lowering tariffs.
