Man arrested for allegedly embezzling more than $100,000 from school district
RALEIGH COUNTY, W.Va. (WVVA/Gray News ) - A former school district employee is accused of embezzling more than $100,000.
Derek Keith Brooks, 39, was charged with embezzlement and fraudulent scheme on April 17 after an investigation by the Beckley Police Department.
According to the affidavit for warrant, the investigation started in February after the Raleigh County Board of Education reported that an active employee was taking property and selling it on eBay.
Brooks, who was the school system’s network , had allegedly been selling items on eBay that were the property of the school district, according to authorities.
The affidavit said that between November 2018 and February 2025, Brooks profited more than $122,000. School property sold on eBay included iPads, iPhones, MacBooks, Apple TVs and other electronic devices.
Brooks would allegedly remove or retire devices from the inventory and post them for sale on eBay.
The affidavit said the monetary loss to the school system was more than $280,000.
