Temu customers slapped with massive ‘import charges’ when ordering certain items
(Gray News) - Temu has started adding “import charges” of about 145% on some items in response to President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
According to Temu, items imported to the United States may be subject to “import charges.”
“These charges cover all customs-related processes and costs, including import fees paid to customs authorities on your behalf. The amount listed may not represent the actual amount paid to customs authorities,” Temu said.
For example, according to CNBC analysis, a dress sold on Temu for $18.47 costs $44.68 after a $26.21 import charge was added to the total. That is a 142% surcharge.
NBC reports that a three-pack of men’s athletic shorts on sale for $23.61 had a $32.75 import charge added, making the total $56.36.
One on X showed an $89.46 import charge added to his $63.66 Temu order. Another on X showed a $147.93 import charge added to a $105.71 order.
Some items that are shipped from U.S. warehouses but are manufactured in China now cost more than items made and shipped from China, but have no import fees. Those items are now labeled as “local” on Temu’s website.
