9-year-old with autism drowns after running away from school during recess
LYONS, Neb. (WOWT/Gray News) - A 9-year-old boy with autism died this week after he got away from his school and was later found in nearby lagoon.
Northeast Elementary School Superintendent Lindsey Beaudette said Kentrix Brehmer, a non-verbal third grader, got out of a gate during recess Monday afternoon and took off running, according to the boy’s father.
At the time he got the call from the school, Matthew Brehmer said his son’s whereabouts were still unknown. Brehmer took his four-wheeler around town, looking for Kentrix in every cornfield and ditch.
“I’ve never been more afraid in my life,” Brehmer said.
After about an hour of searching, Brehmer’s uncle found Kendrix in the lagoon of a nearby park.
“I lost all feeling in my legs. Just collapsed to the ground. Just didn’t know what to do with myself at that moment,” Brehmer said.
The 9-year-old was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead.
His dad said Kentrix loved music and taught himself how to play the piano. He also said that Kentrix loved water, as many children with autism do.
“I just don’t want this to happen to any more kids,” Brehmer said.
Brehmer is left with many questions, wondering why his son was able to get out in the first place and why no one could catch him.
“I just want answers. I want to know how he got away,” he said.
The school’s superintendent sent the following statement in response to Kentrix’s death:
“Yesterday, a tragic accident occurred in our community. Emergency responders provided assistance at the scene, and the student was transported for medical care. Our entire school community is heartbroken. We are keeping the student’s family in our thoughts as they process through the tragic event.
