KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Missouri officers have cited legal statutes as the reason why a Gladstone man was released from custody shortly after an alleged assault, allowing him to reportedly return and break an emergency protection order.

Michael Samuel Sharp III is currently booked in the Clay County Detention Center on two charges stemming from an alleged series of incidents on April 27, 2025.

According to court documents, officers were called to a home in Gladstone at 4:22 a.m. for an active disturbance. They spoke to Sharp and the victim, who the officers learned were in a relationship and living together. The disturbance was only verbal, and there seemed to be no indication of violence, so the officers gave Sharp a ride to his parents’ home.

A short time later, at 6 a.m., court documents state that officers returned to the parents’ home to find Sharp had punched out a window and hurt his hand. After receiving medical treatment, he was given another ride, this time to the area of Vivion Road and Brighton Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri.

Then, at 8:23 a.m., officers were called back to the first residence on a reported assault involving Sharp and his partner.

Sharp was no longer there when officers arrived, but the victim told them that Sharp had arrived at the residence around 8 a.m., drunk and banging on the door, demanding to be given his car keys. The victim said she tried to get Sharp to leave, but he refused and lunged at her, grabbing her shirt and slamming her face on the ground.

Officers located Sharp at a nearby QuikTrip gas station and arrested him there on assault charges. The victim was granted an emergency ex parte restraining order, and it was served to Sharp around 11:30 a.m. with explicit instructions not to her.

In court documents, officers stated that Sharp was then released from custody due to legal restrictions on how long he could be held for a simple assault charge.

At 12:20 p.m., officers returned to the victim’s address after receiving a report that Sharp had “immediately” violated the protection order by allegedly trying to force his way into her residence.

The victim also told officers about a video Sharp had sent to a mutual friend. In the video, Sharp can reportedly be heard calling the victim a “psycho” and saying, “Bro, I literally wish I had by AR because I’d shoot her in the f---ing head.” Officers said Sharp referenced the restraining order, indicating the video was made after the order was served.

The officers said they found Sharp in a wooded area near the victim’s residence and arrested him, this time putting him on a 24-hour hold.

Sharp faces one misdemeanor count of violation of a protection order and one felony count of third-degree domestic assault. He is under a $40,000 bond with his next court date set for May 6, 2025.
