WALLINGFORD, Conn. (Gray News) – A retired firefighter and 9/11 first responder won the top prize on a lottery scratch-off ticket in Connecticut.

Patrick Gordiski and his wife were planning a vacation when they decided to buy a few lottery tickets for fun, according to the Connecticut Lottery.

As they played $500,000 CA$HWORD, Gordiski said he thought to himself, “Wouldn’t it be nice to get a V?”

Turns out, he got the letter he needed and a victory. He won the game’s final top prize of $500,000.

According to lottery officials, the overall odds of a $500,000 CA$HWORD are 1 in 2.78.
