WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - A group of Republican senators introduced a bill on Capitol Hill Thursday that would make it easier for federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty against undocumented immigrants who are convicted of murder.

The bill, titled the Justice for American Victims of Illegal Aliens Act, would amend the U.S. Criminal Code to create a new aggravating factor for undocumented immigrants who murder U.S. citizens.

“What we are doing here today is announcing a bill that will provide the option of the death penalty to a federal prosecution against an illegal alien for killing an American citizen,” said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), who led the introduction of the bill.

Senators Steve Daines (R-MT), Pete Ricketts (R-NE), Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Jim Risch (R-ID), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Tim Scott (R-SC), Jim Banks (R-IN), Jim Justice (R-WV), and Thom Tillis (R-NC) are also co-sponsoring the bill.

“This bill will send the kind of deterrent to reduce the number of unnecessary deaths in our country,” said Sen. Scott.

Cornyn also said that the bill would codify an executive order President Donald Trump signed in January.

“We have to still deal with the millions of people that the Biden istration has let in,” said Sen. Tuberville. “Republicans in Congress, we have to do our part. We have to do it to ensure more American blood is not shed at the hands of criminals who shouldn’t be here in the first place.”
