His cause of death is awaiting the results of an independent autopsy. Per protocol, it is also under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Jason Cott was convicted of murdering his wife, Angela Cott, and her unborn child in January 2010. According to Associated Press reporting at the time, Jason Cott strangled the 29-year-old at a Lenexa motel and then dumped her body by a highway in Miami County, Kansas.

He was initially charged with capital murder but agreed to plead guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and avoid the possibility of the death penalty. After entering a guilty plea in August 2010, he was sentenced to 50 years, or two life sentences, without parole.

Jason Cott was moved from the Lansing Correctional Facility to the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility in May 2023.
