Train engineer hospitalized after car drives around Prospect Ave. railroad crossing barriers
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The Kansas City Police Department is investigating a crash that left a Union Pacific worker seriously injured.
According to a release, emergency responders were called to the area of 2700 Guinotte Avenue shortly before 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, on reports of an injury crash.
Investigators determined that a remote-controlled Union Pacific Railroad train was traveling east on the tracks. A black Ford transit van was headed south on North Prospect Avenue and drove around the red, flashing railroad crossing arms that were blocking traffic while the train ed.
The last tanker car on the train hit the Ford, causing the vehicle to spin 90 degrees. The train’s engineer was standing on the rear platform at the time and was pinned between the tanker car and the Ford. The engineer suffered serious injuries and remains in serious condition in an area hospital.
The Ford’s driver was not injured. KD’s investigation into the crash is ongoing.
