LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (KCTV) - A Leavenworth man will soon be sentenced for an animal cruelty conviction stemming from an incident in late 2023.
The Leavenworth County Attorney’s Office reported Monday that Craig A. Hendricks, 39, was convicted of animal cruelty on May 9, 2025.
In December 2023, Hendricks told an animal control officer he had killed his cat on the 12th by purposefully slamming a door shut on the cat’s head. He said he did it because the cat was trying to kill him.
Hendricks then handed the officer a box he had been storing in his freezer that contained the cat’s body.
The criminal case was delayed due to concerns about Hendricks’ mental competency to stand trial, but he was ultimately found guilty. His sentencing is scheduled for June 18, 2025, and it is unclear what the maximum sentence he faces is.
