KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Jackson County is moving forward with plans to let the people choose who oversees the tax assessment process.

The Jackson County Assessment Department is responsible for valuing and assessing all real and personal property within the county, which is a key component in calculating a property owner’s tax bill..

The legislature ed an ordinance to hold a tax assessor election in August.

It’s not set in stone, as Jackson County Executive Frank White, Jr., could veto the move. If he does, the legislature would require enough votes to override him.

KCTV covered extensively a series of legal and financial challenges surrounding property tax assessments in Jackson County, particularly in the 2023 assessment cycle. These issues led to complaints from homeowners, investigations from state agencies, and ultimately, legal action against the county.

The current Assessor in Jackson County is Gail McCann Beatty who was appointed by White.
