Body found believed to be 12-year-old who was swept away in floodwaters
ALBERMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR/Gray News) – Search crews in Albermarle County, Virginia have found a body they believe could be a missing boy who was swept away by floodwaters Tuesday.
The county fire department said 12-year-old Jordan Sims was last seen near Newton Road and Valley Green Drive around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Authorities paused their search after about three hours Tuesday night due to limited visibility.
Search crews found a body Wednesday in the same area around 8:45 a.m.
The Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond is expected to confirm the identity of the body found.
“This is a heartbreaking outcome, and our hearts are with the Sims family and loved ones,” said Albemarle County Fire Rescue Chief Dan Eggleston. “We are incredibly grateful to our local and regional partners who ed this search effort with urgency, professionalism, and care.”
A 911 caller on Tuesday reported seeing a child swept away by rising creek waters overtaking a road.
They said the child was walking outside and was swept away by rushing water that had taken over the roadway from a nearby creek.
The National Weather Service issued a flood warning in the area between Charlottesville and Waynesboro, stretching to the northwest and southwest corners of Albemarle County.
