Chiefs to open 2025 season in Brazil with first-of-its-kind matchup against Chargers
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Once again, the Kansas City Chiefs are set to become one of the debut teams in a new NFL broadcast venture.
Front Office Sports reported that the Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers will meet in Sao Paolo, Brazil, in Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season in a game that will be broadcast on YouTube. The NFL confirmed that report Wednesday and said the game will kick off at 7 p.m. CT.
The game will be played on Friday, Sept. 5, marking the second year in a row an NFL game in Brazil will be played on the Friday following the NFL’s season-opener.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to play the Chargers in São Paulo to help kick off the 2025 NFL season,” Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said. “As a family and as an organization, we have made a commitment to growing the game of American football internationally.
“This commitment started with my father, Lamar Hunt, who was always finding ways to bring the game to new fans. The 2025 game in São Paulo is a tremendous opportunity for our team, and we are excited to bring Chiefs Kingdom to South America later this year.”
Los Angeles will serve as the home team and it’ll be the second time the two teams have met in an international game, following a 2019 game in Mexico City at Azteca Stadium.
Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce indicated the team would be headed to Brazil on his latest episode of New Heights Podcast.
“We’re definitely playing in Brazil,” Kelce said. “I also heard those rumors. I’ll be there. Not to do a podcast. I’ll be there playing football in the f------ heat.”
The broadcast on YouTube is the continuation of a trend for the Chiefs. They’ve now been featured in the debut broadcast of Amazon Prime’s Thursday Night Football package, Peacock’s exclusive Wild Card playoff broadcast and Netflix’s Christmas Day broadcast.
“We are always honored when the NFL recognizes our organization with unique opportunities to showcase our team, our brand, and Chiefs Kingdom, whether that’s primetime games, international games, or landmark games in of rights and distribution,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said. “Participating in the first game to stream for free around the globe exclusively on YouTube certainly fits that bill, and we can’t wait for audiences around the world to be introduced to Chiefs football when we take on the Chargers in Brazil.”
Kansas City is 11-3 against the Chargers during the Patrick Mahomes era of Chiefs football. The Chiefs won both games against Los Angeles last season, which was the first with head coach Jim Harbaugh in charge of the Bolts.
It’ll be the first time the Chiefs have played internationally since they beat the Miami Dolphins in Frankfurt, , in November 2023.
